Microsft has now added AI noise suppression to Teams.
2020 has been a year where we have seen more people around the world working remotely than we have ever had before and one of the most common complaints to remote working has been background noise when on a video call.
Microsoft Teams has a new AI-based noise suppression feature that can cut out background noise. Because the feature uses AI, it can remove more complicated background noise than traditional noise suppression algorithms.
The feature analyzes a user’s individual audio feeds and uses neural networks to filter out noise. Microsoft has highlighted that traditional noise suppression algorithms can only remove simple stationary noise like fans. The Teams AI noise suppression feature can remove non-stationary noises, like keyboards and food wrappers.
The AI noise suppression feature works in real-time and a user shouldn’t experience any lag when using it in a normal conversation.
The feature is currently limited to PCs using the desktop client, Microsoft is working on bringing the feature to Mac and mobile platforms.
If you would like to try this new feature You can enable this feature in settings or just before a meeting.
From the main Teams window
- Select your profile picture at the top right of Teams and then select Settings.
- Select Devices on the left and then, under Noise suppression, select an option.
• Auto (default) The Teams app decides on the best level of noise suppression based on local noise.
• High Suppresses all background sound that isn’t speech.
• Low Suppresses low levels of persistent background noise, such as a computer fan or air conditioner. Use this setting for playing music.
• Off Noise suppression is disabled. Use this setting for high-fidelity microphones in low noise environments.
From a meeting window
- Select More options in your meeting controls and then select Device settings.
- Under Noise suppression, select an option. (See step 2 above for option descriptions.)
